This easy-to-make dish is perfect for impressing family and friends, offering a delightful combination of flavors that will make your mornings special. Serve with powdered sugar and maple syrup for an extra touch of sweetness!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices of thick-cut bread (like brioche or challah)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup apple pie filling (store-bought or homemade)
  • Butter (for cooking)
  • Powdered sugar (for serving, optional)
  • Maple syrup (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, crack the 2 large eggs and whisk them until smooth.
  2. Add in 1/2 cup of milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, mixing well.
  3. Sprinkle in 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 1 tablespoon of sugar, whisking until the mixture is well combined and slightly frothy. Set aside.
  4. Take your 4 slices of thick-cut bread. For extra texture, let the bread sit out for about 30 minutes to dry slightly.
  5. If using homemade apple pie filling, ensure it’s ready. If using store-bought, warm it in the microwave for about 30 seconds.
  6. Dip each slice of bread into the batter, soaking for about 10-15 seconds on each side. Let excess batter drip off.
  7. In a large skillet or griddle, heat a tablespoon of butter over medium heat until melted and bubbling.
  8. Place the first slice of coated bread onto the skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes until golden brown, then flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes on the other side.
  9. Repeat with the remaining slices, adding more butter as needed.
  10. To assemble, place one slice of French toast on a plate and spoon a generous amount of apple pie filling over the top. Optionally, add another slice on top for a stacked version.
  11. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with warm maple syrup on the side. For extra indulgence, consider adding whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • For added crunch, sprinkle chopped nuts (like pecans or walnuts) over the apple filling before serving.
  • For a spicier flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg or allspice to the batter.
