Description
Creamy avocado mash and melted cheese combine in this gourmet grilled cheese sandwich. A simple yet satisfying comfort food!
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 slices of your favorite bread (Sourdough or multigrain recommended)
- 2 ripe avocados
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 4 slices cheddar cheese (or your cheese of choice)
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
Instructions
- Prepare the Avocado Mash: Halve, pit, and scoop the avocados into a medium bowl. Mash with a fork until mostly smooth, leaving some texture if desired.
- Add lemon juice, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Mix well and set aside.
- Assemble the Grilled Cheese: Butter one side of each bread slice. Place two slices, butter-side down, on a clean surface.
- Top each slice with two slices of cheese.
- Spread the avocado mash generously over the cheese.
- Top with the remaining cheese slices.
- Place the remaining bread slices on top, butter-side up.
- Cook the Grilled Cheese: Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.
- Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet, ensuring they aren’t overcrowded. Cook for 3-5 minutes per side, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey.
- Gently press down on the sandwiches with a spatula while cooking.
- Remove from skillet and slice in half diagonally.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- For best results, use softened butter for even spreading.
- Adjust seasoning of avocado mash to your preference.
- Cook the sandwiches low and slow to ensure the cheese melts without burning the bread.
- Serve with tomato soup, a side salad, or your favorite toppings.
- Variations: Add bacon, ham, or turkey for protein. Use pepper jack cheese or cayenne pepper for spice. Experiment with different cheeses like Gruyere or Monterey Jack. Add sliced tomatoes, spinach, or roasted red peppers. Try different bread types like ciabatta or focaccia. Make it vegan with vegan cheese and butter.
