Description

Savor the deliciousness of classic Sloppy Joes, made with ground beef, sautéed veggies, and a tangy sauce, all piled high on toasted buns. This quick and easy recipe is perfect for weeknight dinners or casual gatherings, offering a comforting meal that everyone will love!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Optional toppings: shredded cheese, pickles, or coleslaw

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Use a wooden spoon to break it up as it cooks. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. Drain any excess fat from the skillet carefully, ensuring you don’t lose any meat.
  3. Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until softened.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, stirring frequently.
  5. Pour in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and mustard. Stir until the meat and vegetables are well coated.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste, starting with about ½ teaspoon of salt and ¼ teaspoon of pepper. Adjust as needed.
  7. Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add a splash of water if the mixture is too thick.
  8. While the meat mixture simmers, prepare the hamburger buns. Toast them in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes or on a skillet with butter for 2-3 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Once the meat mixture is ready, spoon a generous amount onto the bottom half of each toasted bun.
  10. Add optional toppings like shredded cheese, pickles, or coleslaw if desired.
  11. Place the top half of the bun on the Sloppy Joe and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Serve with potato chips, fries, or a simple salad for a complete meal.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat on the stove or in the microwave.
  • The Sloppy Joe mixture can also be used as a filling for baked potatoes or as a topping for nachos.
