Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 34 cups powdered sugar (adjust for desired sweetness)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a large baking sheet or a jelly roll pan (approximately 18×13 inches).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until well mixed.
  3. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the water and cocoa powder, stirring continuously until the mixture comes to a boil.
  4. Remove the saucepan from heat and pour the hot mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined; a few lumps are okay.
  5. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, vanilla extract, and buttermilk together. Add this mixture to the batter and stir gently until fully incorporated. The batter will be thin.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking sheet, spreading it evenly.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the cake cool in the pan on a wire rack for about 10-15 minutes.
  9. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the cocoa powder and milk, stirring until smooth.
  10. Remove from heat and gradually whisk in the powdered sugar until smooth and glossy.
  11. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  12. Once the cake has cooled for about 15 minutes, pour the warm frosting over the top. Spread evenly with a spatula.
  13. Let the frosted cake sit for an additional 30 minutes to allow the frosting to set.
  14. Slice into squares or rectangles and serve.

Notes

  • Store any leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for up to a week.
  • Adjust the amount of powdered sugar in the frosting to achieve your desired sweetness.
