Football Brownies: The Ultimate Game Day Dessert Recipe

  • Total Time: 105 minutes
  • Yield: 12-16 brownies 1x

Description

Fudgy, homemade brownies cut into football shapes and decorated with white icing laces. Perfect for game day!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 (16 ounce) can chocolate frosting
  • White decorating icing (for football laces)

Instructions

  1. Cream the Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, or the bowl of your stand mixer, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy (3-5 minutes on medium speed). Scrape down the sides of the bowl occasionally.
  2. Incorporate the Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, making sure each egg is fully incorporated before adding the next. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually Add Dry Ingredients to Wet Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  5. Fold in Chocolate Chips: Gently fold in the chocolate chips.
  6. Prepare the Baking Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan (or line with parchment paper).
  7. Pour Batter into Pan: Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly.
  8. Bake: Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs attached.
  9. Cool Completely: Let the brownies cool completely in the pan before frosting (at least an hour).
  10. Frost the Brownies: Once the brownies are completely cool, frost them with the chocolate frosting.
  11. Cut into Football Shapes: Use a football-shaped cookie cutter or a sharp knife to cut the brownies into football shapes.
  12. Decorate with White Icing: Fill a piping bag or a zip-top bag with white decorating icing. Pipe the football laces onto each brownie.
  13. Chill (Optional): Place the decorated brownies in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to allow the frosting and icing to set.

Notes

  • For extra fudgy brownies: Reduce the baking time by a few minutes. The center should still be slightly soft.
  • Add nuts: Stir in ½ cup of chopped walnuts, pecans, or almonds to the batter for added texture and flavor.
  • Espresso powder: Add 1 teaspoon of espresso powder to the dry ingredients to enhance the chocolate flavor.
  • Peanut butter swirl: Swirl peanut butter into the batter before baking for a delicious peanut butter and chocolate combination. Warm peanut butter slightly to make it easier to swirl.
  • Different frosting: Use a different type of frosting, such as vanilla, cream cheese, or peanut butter frosting.
  • Sprinkles: Add sprinkles to the frosting for a festive touch.
  • Make it gluten-free: Substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend.
  • Storage: Store the brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • Freezing: You can freeze the brownies for up to 2 months. Wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil. Thaw them in the refrigerator before serving.
