Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy, oat milk recommended)
- 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee or 2 shots of espresso
- 2 tablespoons molasses
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
- Pinch of ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Whipped cream, for topping (optional)
- Gingerbread cookie crumbs, for garnish (optional)
- Cinnamon stick, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, whisk together the molasses, brown sugar, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until the brown sugar is completely dissolved and the mixture begins to simmer.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer gently for about 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- (Optional) Strain the syrup through a fine-mesh sieve for a smoother texture.
- Let the syrup cool completely before using. Store leftover syrup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
- Brew strong coffee or espresso.
- Keep the coffee hot.
- Heat milk in a saucepan over medium heat until steaming, but not boiling. Alternatively, microwave for 1-2 minutes until steaming.
- Froth the milk using a milk frother, French press, whisk, or jar method.
- Pour 2-3 tablespoons of gingerbread syrup into your mug.
- Pour the hot coffee or espresso over the syrup and stir well.
- Gently pour the frothed milk into the mug, holding back the foam.
- Spoon the remaining milk foam on top.
- Garnish with whipped cream, gingerbread cookie crumbs, and/or a cinnamon stick (optional).
- Enjoy!
Notes
- Variations: Make it iced, add chocolate, spice it up with cayenne pepper, use different spices, make it vegan, adjust sweetness, or make a large batch of syrup.
- Adjust the amount of gingerbread syrup to your liking.
- Use any type of milk you prefer. Oat milk is recommended for its frothing ability and naturally sweet flavor.
- For a smoother syrup, strain it through a fine-mesh sieve.
