Description
A surprisingly delicious and nutritious smoothie combining the sweetness of orange with the earthy flavor of red cabbage, blended with Greek yogurt, chia seeds, and a hint of ginger.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 medium orange, peeled and segmented
- 1/4 head of red cabbage, roughly chopped
- 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk (or any milk of your choice)
- 1/4 cup water (adjust for desired consistency)
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (optional, for sweetness)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- A pinch of cinnamon (optional, for warmth)
- Ice cubes (optional, for a colder smoothie)
Instructions
- Prepare Ingredients: Peel and segment the orange. Roughly chop the red cabbage into 1-inch squares. Measure out all remaining ingredients.
- Blend: Add almond milk and water to the blender. Add orange segments and chopped red cabbage. Add Greek yogurt, chia seeds, honey (or maple syrup), ginger, and cinnamon.
- Blend on High: Secure the lid and blend on high speed until completely smooth (1-2 minutes). If needed, stop and push ingredients down with a spatula.
- Check Consistency: If too thick, add more almond milk or water. If too thin, add ice or Greek yogurt.
- Add Ice (Optional): Add ice cubes and blend until smooth.
- Taste and Adjust: Adjust sweetness or spice to your liking.
- Serve: Pour into a glass and enjoy immediately. Garnish with orange slice, cinnamon, or chia seeds if desired.
Notes
- For extra nutrients, add a handful of spinach or kale.
- Experiment with other fruits like mango, pineapple, or berries.
- Add a scoop of your favorite protein powder to increase the protein content.
- Try adding other spices like turmeric, cardamom, or nutmeg for different flavor combinations.
- To make this smoothie vegan, use a plant-based yogurt alternative and maple syrup or agave nectar instead of honey.
- The amount of sweetness you need will depend on the sweetness of your orange and your personal preference. Start with a small amount of honey or maple syrup and add more to taste.
- While it’s best to drink your smoothie right away, you can prepare the ingredients ahead of time. Chop the cabbage, peel the orange, and measure out the other ingredients. Store them in separate containers in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to make the smoothie, simply combine all the ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth.
- If you’re worried about the taste of cabbage, start with a smaller amount (1/8 head) and gradually increase it as you get used to the flavor. The orange, ginger, and other ingredients will help to mask the cabbage taste.
