Description
Enjoy a refreshing Shikanji, a traditional Indian lemonade that blends tangy lemons with a hint of spice. This easy-to-make drink is perfect for hot days and will impress your friends and family with its unique flavors.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large lemons
- 1/2 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon black salt
- 1/4 teaspoon roasted cumin powder
- 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder (optional, for a spicy kick)
- 6 cups cold water
- Ice cubes (as needed)
- Fresh mint leaves (for garnish)
- 1–2 lemon slices (for garnish)
Instructions
- Roll the lemons on a clean surface with your palm to release the juices.
- Cut the lemons in half and juice them using a citrus juicer or by hand, removing any seeds.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the freshly squeezed lemon juice with the sugar. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
- Add the black salt, roasted cumin powder, and red chili powder (if using) to the lemon-sugar mixture. Stir until well combined.
- In a large pitcher, pour in the 6 cups of cold water. Adjust the amount of water based on your taste preference.
- Slowly add the lemon-sugar mixture to the pitcher of water. Stir gently to combine. Taste and adjust sweetness or saltiness as needed.
- If the lemonade is too strong, add more water to reach your desired taste.
- Cover the pitcher with a lid or plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
- For a quicker option, you can skip this step, but chilling enhances the taste.
- Once chilled, fill your favorite glasses with ice cubes.
- Pour the chilled Shikanji over the ice, filling each glass to the brim.
- Garnish with fresh mint leaves and a slice of lemon on the rim.
- Stir gently before serving to mix the flavors.
- Sip and enjoy the tangy, sweet, and slightly spicy flavors.
- Perfect for gatherings, picnics, or hot days at home. Feel free to experiment with fruits like watermelon or cucumber for a twist.
- Share with friends and family to showcase this delightful traditional beverage!
- Transfer any remaining Shikanji back into the pitcher and cover tightly.
- Store in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. The flavors may intensify, so stir well before serving again.
Notes
- Adjust sugar and salt according to your taste preference.
- For a unique twist, consider adding fruits or herbs to the Shikanji.
