Description

This Tomato Basil Biscuit Strata is a savory baked dish with layers of buttery biscuits, fresh cherry tomatoes, mozzarella, and a creamy egg mixture. Ideal for brunch or a cozy dinner, it’s easy to make and packed with flavor, making it a perfect crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 batch of homemade or store-bought buttermilk biscuits (about 810 biscuits)
  • 2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1 cup fresh mozzarella balls, halved or quartered
  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves, roughly chopped
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (optional, for drizzling)

Instructions

  1. If using homemade biscuits, preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and prepare the biscuit dough according to your recipe or package instructions. For store-bought biscuits, skip this step.
  2. Bake the biscuits for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. If using store-bought, follow package instructions.
  3. Let the biscuits cool for a few minutes, then cut them into quarters.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine halved cherry tomatoes, mozzarella balls, and chopped basil. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Toss gently to coat.
  5. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs until well beaten. Add whole milk, garlic powder, onion powder, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Whisk until smooth.
  6. In a 9×13 inch baking dish, layer the biscuit pieces evenly across the bottom.
  7. Sprinkle half of the tomato and mozzarella mixture over the biscuits.
  8. Pour half of the egg mixture over the biscuit and filling layer, ensuring it seeps into the biscuits.
  9. Repeat the layering with the remaining biscuit pieces, followed by the rest of the tomato and mozzarella mixture, and finally pour the remaining egg mixture over the top.
  10. Gently press down on the strata with a spatula to ensure all biscuits are submerged in the egg mixture.
  11. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil.
  12. Bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese over the top.
  13. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the egg is set in the center.
  14. Let the strata cool for 10-15 minutes before slicing. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar if desired.
  15. Slice into squares or rectangles and serve warm.
